Jeter hurt as Yankees win
Jeter bruised his lower left leg and sprained his knee
American League Mike Mussina and the Yankees ended Jim Thome's seven-game homer streak - one short of a Major League record - as New York beat the Cleveland Indians . Raul Mondesi hit his first homer for the Yankees as Thome failed to match the record shared by Ken Griffey Jr, Don Mattingly and Dale Long. Mondesi, acquired from Toronto for a minor league pitcher Monday, homered off Chuck Finley (4-11) and hit an RBI double as New York won for the sixth time in seven games. But the Yankees celebrations were tempered as star shortstop Derek Jeter, who has started each of his team's 84 games this season, injured his left leg. Jeter was hurt when Cleveland rookie John McDonald slid hard into Jeter's leg at second base, bruising his lower left leg and spraining his knee. He was taken to Beth Israel Hospital for precautionary measures before returning to Yankee Stadium. In Boston, Nomar Garciaparra homered and drove in four runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 9-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays for their first five-game sweep in 13 years. Trot Nixon homered and drove in three runs, and Derek Lowe got his 12th victory. The Red Sox have won 10 straight games against the Blue In Seattle, John Olerud drove in two runs and hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning as the Seattle Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 in a meeting of AL division leaders. National League Javy Lopez celebrated Independence Day with three hits and two runs to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 5-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. Lopez drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning double and added an RBI single during a three-run eighth as the Braves won their 54th game of the season. Reliever Mike Remlinger (6-0) seized another win by retiring just two batters, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Mark Prior (2-2) allowed two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings but took the loss. In Cincinnati, Eric Young hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-4 victory over the Reds. Danny Graves (3-3) allowed two runs on three hits in the ninth, including Young's game-winning blow. He struck out one and walked one. In Philadelphia, Brad Wilkerson hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth to help the Montreal Expos defeat the Phillies 2-1.
