Chelios keeps his Wings
Veteran star: Chelios lifts the Stanley Cup in June
Chris Chelios re-signed with Stanley Cup champions Detroit on Wednesday, agreeing a two-year contract worth a reported $12m.
The deal comes just a day after the Red Wings stole Toronto netminder Curtis Joseph from the free agent pool to fill the hole left by the retirement Dominik Hasek. Chelios, a three-times Norris Trophy winner, was a key figure in Detroit's championship run, scoring six goals and earning 33 assists from defence.
In 19 NHL seasons, the 40-year-old has played for three teams - Detroit, Chicago and Montreal - collecting 168 goals, 667 assists and 2,430 penalty minutes. "Signing Chris Chelios is a high priority," general manager Ken Holland told the Detroit News. |
