Bonds closes on legends
Bonds has hit 19 home runs already this year
The San Francisco Giants' Barry Bonds is inching ever closer to baseball's big three home run heroes - Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays. Bonds hit his 586th home run in a 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies, drawing him level with Frank Robinson on the all-time home run list.
Aaron tops the list with 755 career homers, followed by Ruth with 714 and Mays, Bonds' godfather who also played for the Giants, with 660. Bonds began the season in seventh spot with 567 homers. He passed Harmon Killebrew (573) and the recently-retired Mark McGwire (583) earlier in the season. He now has 19 for the year, tying him with rival Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs for the league lead.
