China's former Olympic table tennis champion Kong Linghui was detained by police after he crashed his car into a taxi in drink-driving incident.
Kong, 31, won Olympic doubles gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games and the singles title at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
China's coach Liu Guoliang said: "I hope other members of the team can learn from this. Kong's accident is a warning to us."
Kong was initially fined over the incident but could still be jailed.
He was not expected to compete at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 because of his age, but was assuming more of a coaching role.
