Smith finally claims Team GB spot

Venue: Glasgow Dates: 25 to 28 June Coverage: Daily video highlights on the BBC Sport website (UK only)

Report - Double success for Miley

Lewis Smith secured his place in the Great Britain team for July's World Championships with a win in the men's 400m individual medley in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old recovered from disappointments in the 200m medley and 400m freestyle events at the Scottish National Championships to win in style.

Joseph Roebuck finished more than three seconds behind in second place as Smith pulled away on the backstroke leg.

Ian Hulme also qualified for Rome with a narrow 100m butterfly win.

Smith, who was edged out in qualifying for the Beijing Olympic team, had seen Loughborough University's Roebuck steal through in the 200m medley on Saturday.

But his confidence of reversing that result over the longer distance proved well-founded.

"I knew his backstroke's not always his strongest and I had a chance of breaking him there," he said.

"Once I got ahead, I wasn't going to let him come past me.

"I'm a bit relieved now because I had two chances of making the team and they kind of passed me by."

Hulme also avenged a previous defeat as he took first place just 0.04 seconds ahead of Antony James.

James, who had beaten Hulme in the British Championships, broke his personal best with a time of 52.13 seconds but it was not enough as Hulme also pulled out a career-best.

"I can't believe it - I'm still in shock, really. It's been a long time in coming but I'm chuffed to bits," said Hulme.

Hannah Miley sealed her third and fourth victories of the meet with wins in the 200m breaststroke and 1500m freestyle.

The 19-year-old entered 10 events and completed 18 races over the four-day event at Tollcross Park Leisure Centre.

Relay specialist Andrew Hunter will represent Great Britain in the 200m freestyle after coming home in a winning time of one minute 47.67 seconds.

But Katherine Wyld's triumph in the 100m freestyle was not quick enough to wrestle away Caitlin McClatchey's place in the World Championships.

There were also wins for Louise Pate in the 50m butterfly and Craig Gibbons in the 50m backstroke.
