Thorpe set to quit after Beijing
Ian Thorpe
Thorpe is a five-time Olympic champion
Australia's five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe intends to retire from swimming after the 2008 Beijing Games.

Thorpe, 23, said a new seven-year deal with sportswear company adidas was unlikely to mean he would extend his career to the 2012 London Olympics.

"It's not out of the question but at the moment I intend to retire in Beijing," he told The Australian.

"It (the adidas deal) is there if I want to go on, but if I don't want to, I can become an ambassador for adidas."

The 200 and 400m Olympic freestyle champion and world record holder will swim in Australia's Commonwealth Games trials next week.

Thorpe hopes to contest the 100m and 200m freestyle in Melbourne in March.

He decided to take a long break from competitive swimming after the 2004 Athens Games and skipped last July's World Championships in Montreal.

He attempted a comeback last November but only lasted one race before withdrawing from the 100m freestyle final at the Fina World Cup.
