Australian swim star Ian Thorpe will make his competitive return at his country's Commonwealth Games selection trials in Melbourne in the new year.
Thorpe is keen to avoid burnout
Thorpe has been on a break since winning the 200m and 400m Olympic freestyle titles in Athens in 2004.
But the 23-year-old will bid to qualify for the Commonwealths, to be hosted by Melbourne in March, at the trials which run from 30 January to 4 February.
The 200m and 400m world record holder wants to go for gold at both distances.
Dave Flaskas, Thorpe's manager, said the swimmer "has been having a bit of a break but training really hard and just getting ready for the Commonwealth Games".
Thorpe - who also missed the recent World Championships in Montreal - was among 17 global and Olympic champions, including Grant Hackett, named for the trials by Australian Swimming on Friday.
