Daryl Selby's squash win a 'career highlight'

Daryl Selby
Selby beat Matthew in five games to win the British title

Essex squash player Daryl Selby says winning the British National Championships is the highlight of his career so far.

Selby, 28, beat world number one Nick Matthew in Manchester last weekend to win the competition for the first time.

He told BBC Essex: "It's by far the biggest thing I've ever won, I've won 10 professional titles but it's a different feeling.

"To wake up in the morning and say I'm British champion is quite special."

The world number 10 from Shenfield added: "Hopefully I can get that up somewhere in the top four or five in the world.

"With wins over the world number one you can't beat anyone better than that, so if I can keep reproducing this form hopefully I can get a lot higher."

Selby has already claimed three titles this year, after winning events in Vancouver and Edinburgh in January.

He turned professional in 2004, reaching his highest world ranking of ninth in April 2010.
