Northern Ireland's Madeline Perry in action against Jenny Duncalf in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in Canberra
Madeline Perry has won the Australian Open by beating Alison Waters of England in a thrilling five-game final. The Banbridge woman saved two match points against the world number three before claiming the biggest win of her career 11-5, 12-10, 6-11, 4-11 13-11. The tense match in Canberra's National Convention Centre ended controversially as Waters claimed she should have been awarded a 'let' for interference. The umpire ruled against replaying the point, handing Perry the championship. Irish champion Perry had reached the final by knocking out the number one seed Jenny Duncalf of England. In the men's final England's world number one Nick Matthew beat Egyptian rival Ramy Ashour in straight games.
