Gillett proves the Master
Les Gillett put his poor recent record to one side to battle his way to the HJ Hall Welsh Masters Bowls Championship at Llanelli on Friday.

Gillett, who had not won a senior match all season, held his nerve to beat home favourite Robert Weale 11-4, 6-12, 2-1 in a tension-packed final at the Selwyn Samuel Centre.

It continued an eventful run for Gillett, who won his three other games during the week by tie-breaks.

If you think a tie-break is for the match, you start to have some wobbly knees

"I was the first critic of the tie-break when it was brought in," said the man from Melton Mowbray. "But I think they are really good now.

"It is a pressure situation and you just have to keep your cool and think it is another end.

"If you start to think it's for the match, you start to have some wobbly knees."

Gillett, who won £2,000 for taking the title, said there was a thin line between success and failure.

"I know I have had a poor run, but the top players are so well matched that there are lots of close games."

He added: " It was a great match against Robert, going down to the wire. And I'm as pleased as punch to have won."

Weale was disappointed to have missed out, but gave credit to the champion.

"Les played the better bowls, and I was really patchy on the greens," he said. "At least I came back to make a game of it."

Earlier, Gillett had seen off the challenge of John Price, with Weale beating his Welsh team-mate Mike Prosser.
