Allcock suffers early exit
Tony Allcock
Allcock lost in a third set tie-break
Newly-crowned world indoor singles champion Tony Allcock was unceremoniously dumped out of the first round of the HJ Hall Welsh Bowls Masters on Wednesday.

Fellow Englishman Les Gillett secured a famous victory with a perfect last ball to clinch the match in a third set tie-break.

The win was all the more remarkable since it represented Gillett's first indoor singles win of the season.

"Unbelievable," said Gillett after the match. "And to be honest, it was probably not one of my better performances - but I won.

I didn't really expect to win
Tony Allcock
"I'm pleased to get through, and I can say I beat the world champion.

"I'm chuffed to bits."

Allcock only turned up to play In Llanelli after accepting a late invitation. He admitted his match preparation had been less than ideal.

"It was a great game," he said. "I was pleased just to perform as well as I did under the circumstances.

"I was cleaning kennels at ten o'clock this morning, so I didn't really expect to win.

"But Les played very well, so I've got no axe to grind."

Gillett will no play Greg Harlow in the quarter-final.

Harlow enjoyed a comfortable first round win over Jonathon Ross on Wednesday.

In the other remaining first round matches, Welshman Robert Weale came through a tight match against England's Julie Forrest, and Andy Thompson beat Jason Greenslade.
