Allcock clinches title
Tony Allcock surprised himself with his form
Tony Allcock powered his way to bowls' World Indoor Singles Championship title at Hopton-on-Sea on Sunday.
Allcock produced a blistering display to see off the challenge of Richard Corsie 8-3 9-4 and claim the £25,000 first prize. Allcock counted an opening end double, and from there on dominated the opening set, taking it in just eight ends. A wonderful last delivery on the opening end of the second set saw Allcock nudge the only Corsie bowl in the head, trail the jack a few inches and count a full house.
That put him firmly in the driving seat, and although Corsie replied with a single, the match was all but over as Allcock moved 6-1 ahead at four ends. The game was finally put out of Corsie's reach when he dropped an eighth end double. After the game an emotional Allcock admitted he surprised himself with his victory. "I can't believe it, I came here hoping to go a few rounds at most, but my game just got better and better," said Allcock. "I've been more relaxed at this event than I have ever been, perhaps its because I feel at home here. "Plus I also know that a lot of people thought I was over the hill - I hadn't been bowling many competitive matches so there was no pressure on me," added Allcock. Killer shot It was the second successive year Corsie had lost in the final but he was full of praise for Allcock's awesome performance. "Even if I had played well it would have taken a lot to beat him on that form. That is the best I have ever seen him playing," said Corsie. "The killer shot came in the first end of the second set - he got the perfect result, and my back was up against the wall." Allcock now joins David Bryant and Corsie as a three-time winner of this title.
