Allcock to face Foster

Defending champion Paul Foster and former winner Tony Allcock will meet in the semi-finals of the World Indoor Bowls after both enjoyed quarter-final wins.

Foster, who is going for a record-equalling third title, beat Coleraine postman Gary McCloy 11-6 6-4.

And 46-year-old Allcock - winner of the title in 1986 and 1987- continued his run when he survived a tie-break against Ireland's 13th seed Jonathan Ross, to win 9-5 3-10 2-0.

Top seed Foster did not have things all his own way against McCloy, who took the Commonwealth Games fours gold medal in 1998.

Indeed the man dubbed the "Troon Tornado" trailed 4-6 after six ends of the opening set. But a double, followed by a full house and a single, pushed the set his way.

Killer shot

In a tightly-contested second set, and with McCloy holding the shots he needed to push the match into a tie-break, Foster slammed the jack to the ditch to take the shot he needed to move through to the semis.

"I picked up an easy four in the opening set, and that was a bonus, because neither Gary nor I were playing as well as we could, we were both in and out of the game," said Foster.

"There were two or three times I had chances in the game but I never capitalised.

"I'm in the semis and I know I will still need to play better, I've never stretched myself, and I feel I need to be more consistent,."

I think Paul's the hardest man in the tournament to beat
Tony Allcock

A disappointed McCloy said: "My aim when I came here was to reach the quarter-finals, but after achieving that you start looking at going all the way. However I can't complain, it's been a very good championships for me".

A delighted Allcock admitted he was 'hanging in' for periods of his tense quarter-final.

"It was a see-saw of a game" he said.

"Jonathan played to his strength on the short jacks and I was the same on the long. I just had to hang in. In the tie-break I just wiped the slate clean and started again"

Allcock added: "I'm looking forward to my semi-final against Paul immensely. I think he's the hardest man in the tournament to beat - he's the form horse and he's an occasion player, a very class act."

The semi-finals take place on Saturday, with the final to be played on Sunday.

Thursday's results:

Paul Foster (1) (Sco) bt Gary McCloy (Ire) 11-6 6-4
