Small's big character
Chris Small suffers from a spine condition
Chris Small suffers from a spine condition
Chris Small almost gave up professional snooker because he suffers from a painful disease of the spine.

But the Scot has battled through the pain barrier to clinch the LG Cup in Preston.

In a nervy encounter against fellow Scot Alan McManus, in which Small had to have a pain killing injection before the start of play, Small remained calm to win his first world ranking tournament.

  Chris Small facts
World ranking: 29
Turned professional: 1991
Highest tournament break: 141
Career prize money: 359,910

He was a 150/1 shot at the start of the tournament but eased his way through the rounds.

Former World championship Steve Davis has a lot of admiration for the boy from Leith.

He described the 29-year-old former bank clerk as gutsy and someone who never gives up.

Davis said Small was not the quickest lad on the circuit but it was highly unfair to criticise him for playing at the speed he does.

He said Small was hard, tough and very talented and that he reminded Davis very much of former world champion Cliff Thorburn.

They used to say Thorburn never missed a shot through carelessless and Davis thinks exactly the same of Small.

And those who witnessed the final on Sunday certainly appreciated Small's grit and determination.
