Parrott suffers early exit
John Parrott
Horse racing fan Parrott has failed at the first hurdle
John Parrott has been unceremoniously dumped out of the LG Cup at Preston Guild Hall at the first round stage.

The former world champion lost 5-1 to Pakistan number one Shokat Ali in the best of nine frames match.

Parrott started well by winning the opening frame, but it proved to be only a consolation as Ali reeled off the next five in succession.

Earlier, Ryan Day set up a match with defending champion Stephen Lee by beating Ali Carter 5-3.

Day, who was named newcomer of the year by both the Snooker Writers Association and World Snooker, the game's governing body, swiftly moved into a 3-0 lead.

Carter clawed his way to 3-2 with breaks of 53 and 63 before Day took the sixth with a break of 83 and eventually clinched victory by clearing from the last red to pink in the eighth.

"I felt the pressure a bit at 4-2 but I made a good clearance in the last frame," Day said.

"My form is up and down so hopefully it will be up against Stephen."

Another Welshman, Anthony Davies, defeated Scot Marcus Campbell 5-0 and now provides the second-round opposition for world number four John Higgins.

Fergal O'Brien is also through to the second round, the Irishman edging out England's Nick Dyson 5-3.

The last of the afternoon session matches saw Tony Drago and Gerard Greene overcome Gary Wilkinson and Dominic Dale respectively, both matches finishing 5-3.

In Saturday's evening session, Michael Holt defeated Drew Henry 5-3 and Anthony Hamilton edged past Ian McCulloch 5-4
