Local hero Ding Junhui sealed a 5-2 win over defending champion Peter Ebdon in the quarter-finals of the China Open. Ding was 4-0 ahead with runs of 93, 121 and 92, but Ebdon ground out the next two frames with runs of 70 and 49. But Ding, 23, won the seventh frame 81-0 and booked a semi-final with Mark Allen, who beat Stephen Hendry 5-4. Hendry had a break of 126 and was 4-2 up but Allen won the decider with a 77, while Mark Williams and Ali Carter will contest the other semi-final. Both players completed comfortable 5-1 victories in the evening matches. Former world champion Williams quickly took a 3-0 advantage against Marco Fu, highlighted by a break of 116 in the third frame.

Hong Kong's Fu got on the scoreboard following a long fourth, but Williams closed out the contest with back-to-back frames. Mark King made a break of 74 to level his match with Carter but his highest effort after that was a mere 22 as Carter reeled off four successive frames. After Hendry's assured century break levelled the match at 1-1, the seven-time world champion's highest for the remainder of the match was just 36 as Allen began to find his touch. "At 4-2 down I still believed I could win, and I held myself together well to win the last three frames," Allen told www.worldsnooker.com. "I can take a lot of confidence from this result, although I will need to improve in the next round. "To play Ding in China is the sort of game we practise for. There will be a big crowd and good atmosphere, and with two young, attacking players it should be entertaining."
