Barry Pinches bundled former world champion Shaun Murphy out of the Grand Prix in the first round in Glasgow. Murphy missed a crucial yellow at 4-3 and that was all the opening Pinches needed to fight back for a 5-4 victory. Earlier, former world champions Stephen Hendry and Peter Ebdon both booked their berths in the second round. Hendry took a 3-1 lead against Matthew Selt before wrapping up a 5-2 victory, while Ebdon beat China's Liang Wenbo by the same scoreline. The pair shared the first four frames before Ebdon pulled away, winning the last with a run of 32..

Ebdon has won one Grand Prix title, back in 1993, while seven-time world champion Hendry is looking to clinch his fifth crown Hendry said he felt "pretty comfortable" during his win over Selt. "I played one or two bad shots. My concentration was very good, and I just stayed focused. "The job in the first round is to win the game - it's not about looking good or playing your best. There's plenty of time to do that," said the Scot.

"I am playing well in practice, and my goal for this season is to replicate that form where it matters. If I do that I can break back into the top eight." Shortly before Murphy fell to Pinches on Monday night Northern Ireland's Mark Allen beat England's Ian McCulloch 5-3 to reach the second round. Allen, 23, a semi-finalist at the Crucible earlier this year, made four breaks of over 50 and finished off with a run of 55. The draw for the last 16 will be made live on BBC Two at 1330 BST on Tuesday, 6 October.
