Milkins ends Carter celebrations

Ding Junhui

Rob Milkins brought new father Ali Carter back down to earth by beating him 5-1 in the Grand Prix first round.

World number five Carter was only able to focus on playing after his wife gave birth to their first child, son Max, just ahead of the Glasgow tournament.

Milkins, ranked 55th, set the tone by winning the first frame 105-0, and Carter never found his rhythm.

China's Ding Junhui is also through to the second round after fighting back to beat Matthew Stevens of Wales 5-4.

Ding found himself 4-2 down but pulled it back to 4-3 with an excellent break of 105 in the seventh frame.

However, Stevens still looked set for victory as he pulled out to a 31-3 lead.

But Ding fought back to level the game, and went on to win the decisive ninth thanks in large part to a great shot to split the reds early on.

Earlier, Ding had made a series of mistakes to squander a 2-0 lead.

Stevens came off best in a tense fifth frame that was settled after a series of snookers, and he then grabbed the fourth after Ding missed a green under pressure.

In the evening session, Englishman Jamie Cope beat Welsh world number six Ryan Day 5-3, and world number nine Neil Robertson saw off the challenge of Northern Irishman Gerard Greene.

In a topsy-turvy match, Cope took a 2-0 lead against Day, only to see last year's losing finalist seize the momentum by winning three successive frames, the first of which also saw him miss out on a 147 break due to a missed pink.

However, 24-year-old Cope struck back and won the next three frames to claim victory.

Australian Robertson was 2-0 and 3-1 behind to 35-year-old Greene, who reached the semi-final of this tournament in 2007, but won four consecutive frames to book his place in round two.
