David Gray was made to work hard for his 10-7 win over a brave Ali Carter.
Gray held firm despite Carter's fightback
Carter, trailing 6-3 from the first session, started well and took both opening frames to close the gap before Gray hit back with a 57.
The pair traded frames, but Carter was unable to make significant inroads into Gray's lead despite some positive play.
And once the 12th seed got in among the balls in the final frame the result was never really in doubt and he made an 86 to clinch the match.
David Gray said his major focus was on retaining his top 16 status after the victory.
"It was a crunch match for both of us," said Gray, who had Carter breathing down his neck for a place in the sport's elite.
"It was a high standard considering there was so much riding on it.
"I got off to a nightmare start when he won the first two frames and now I can start thinking about my next match."
