Matthew Stevens reached the second round with a hard-earned 10-7 win over Thailand's James Wattana.
Stevens was pushed all the way by Wattana
Wattana took the opening frame with a fluent 95 before the match turned into an engrossing tactical battle with the Thai coming out on top for a 5-7 lead.
But Stevens suddenly regained his touch and took the next three frames with some astute play.
The 10th seed hit a break of 71 in the 16th to move within touching distance and held on for victory.
Stevens admitted he was relieved to claim his first win since November.
He said: "I'd be lying if I said my confidence hadn't dropped a bit after losing all those matches.
"Obviously I haven't been playing as I can but hopefully I can save all my best form for The Crucible.
"I'm going to have to play a lot better if I'm going to go any further but I'm really looking forward to it now."
