Stephen Maguire has hailed the influence of former world champion Terry Griffiths after he beat Jimmy White to claim the European Open title.
Terry Griffiths has been a massive influence on Stephen Maguire
The world number 41, who had previously failed to get past the last 16 of a ranking event, has been working on the mental side of his game.
"I've been working with Terry on getting my mind right," said Maguire.
"He's been on the phone just telling me to keep calm and that I can do it if I believe in myself."
Maguire, who turns 23 this Saturday, headed to Malta without a great deal of hope that he could break his ranking tournament duck.
But he was in fine form all week and defeated Peter Ebdon, Joe Perry, John Higgins and Stephen Lee before thrashing White 9-3 in the final.
"I've never been past the last 16 of a ranking tournament before but I always knew I was good enough to win one," he said.
"It was just a case of doing it for the first time.
"The semi-finals were a big stumbling block because I was under so much
pressure but I felt really good for the final."
