Matthew Stevens wasted little time in securing a place in the second round as he notched up a 10-3 win over Chris Small.
Stevens is safely into round two
Stevens started the session with a 7-2 lead over the qualifier and won the first frame with a break of 61 before Small replied with a 66 in the next.
But the eighth seed rattled in a break of 75 in the 12th frame to stand just one short of victory.
And a break of 72 in the final frame set Stevens up for a meeting with Paul Hunter or Allister Carter in round two.
"I played pretty soundly over the couple of days of the match," said Stevens.
"I love playing at The Crucible. The crowds are great and if you can't play well here, you'll never play well."
You should be up for it playing here but I felt like my brain was ready to explode
Small felt he had paid the price for practising too much during the past month.
"I just felt totally stale and flat. You should be up for it playing here at The Crucible but I felt like my brain was ready to explode," he said.
"It was frustrating knowing I was blowing my chances of a place in the top 16 next season, but you have to learn from your mistakes."
