Top seed Peter Ebdon made an impressive start to the defence of his world title with a confident 10-3 victory against qualifier Gerard Greene.
Ebdon compiled a 127 break in the opening frame
Ebdon sealed the match by taking the first four frames in the evening after starting with a comfortable 6-3 lead.
A fine 135 break in the second frame, Ebdon's second century of the match, was followed up with a 65 in the 11th.
And when Greene spurned chances in the final two frames, Ebdon took full advantage to secure his passage into round two.
"I've been wearing stronger contact lenses recently and without them I probably wouldn't be in the top 16," said Ebdon.
"Now I can work hard before my next match. If I'm as mentally strong as I can be I think I can go on and win it.
"It's nice to get the first match out of the way, but Gerard is a fine player and did not show how good he can be."
Greene said: "I let myself down a bit. This has been my best season but I missed more balls in this match than I have done all season.
"When I was 4-3 down I had to play away from a touching pink and from then on it all went wrong.
"But Peter is a great player and I always knew this was going to be a tough match for me."
