Williams hammers Hendry

Mark Williams 9-2 Stephen Hendry

Mark Williams wasted little time in wrapping up a resounding win over Stephen Hendry with one of his most complete displays so far this season.

Impressive break building in the first session, including runs of 93 and 119, had seen Williams march 7-1 clear.

Hendry, chasing a record-equalling sixth UK title, rallied with an 86 clearance to claw his way back to 7-2.

But his friend and rival Williams won a cagey 10th and then secured a semi-final place by taking the 11th 71-0.

The Welshman admitted he was as surprised as anyone about the margin of his victory.

"I can't dream of beating anyone 9-2, let alone a player like Stephen," he said.

"He is still such a good player even though he is not in his prime.

"A few years ago he could have given players like me and John Higgins a head start and still have gone on to win.

"He is nowhere near that now because he is getting on a bit, but that is lucky for me to be honest."

Hendry said he expects a merciless ribbing from Williams after the manner of his defeat.

"I will have to take my phone off the hook. I am glad it was not 9-1 because then I would get remorseless stick, it will be bad enough anyway," he said.

"I'm sure he will still get through to me somehow and he will slaughter me, but I deserve it.

"I played terribly and he did a good job on me. I couldn't really give a monkey's who wins it now."
