Switzerland's Michael von Gruenigen won the final giant slalom of the season at Flachau, as Frederic Covili claimed the World Cup title.

The 32-year-old Von Gruenigen took his first race of the season to finish 0.13 seconds ahead of the leader after the first run, Austrian Benjamin Raich.

A mistake midway down the course on his second run ended Raich's hopes of victory.

Overall, downhill and super-G World Cup champion Stephan Eberharter of Austria, one of five men who had a chance of winning the giant slalom title going into the race, was third.

Covili's title came shortly after his compatriot, Laure Pequegnot won the women's slalom season crown.

Covili became the first French man since Patrick Russel in 1971 to win the giant slalom World Cup .

He was fifth last year.after finishing fifth in the season's final.
