David Phelps will lead Wales' shooting team in Delhi as the rifleman bids to defend his Commonwealth Games crown.

The 33-year-old shop worker, who won prone gold at the 2006 Melbourne Games, is part of a 19-strong squad that has a wealth of Commonwealth experience.

Johanne Brekke will star at her fourth Games and was rifle champion in 2002 in Manchester while she also won medals in both Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur.

Twins Jenny and Sian Corish, 22, will be Brekke's rifle team-mates in Delhi.

But Phelps, preparing for his third Commonwealths, is under pressure to perform in the Indian capital after winning two medals in Melbourne four years ago.

The Cardiff rifleman also won pairs bronze and will aim to retain his Commonwealth title in October.

Games debutant Jamie Drummer, the 2008 Commonwealth Shooting federation champion, and John Croydon, set for his third Commonwealth appearance, will join Phelps in the rifle ranks as 31-year-old Croydon hopes to go one better from his fourth-placed finish in Melbourne 2006.

Great Britain international Mike Wixey, a star of two Commonwealth Games, won team bronze in Manchester 2002 and is joined by 2009 British number one and 2010 Commonwealth champion Malcolm Allen, who has appeared in three Commonwealths, in the shotgun team.

Both Commonwealth veterans will compete alongside Welsh shotgun rookies Rhys Price and Scott Morgan as the 20-year-olds are highly-rated promising youngsters.

Steve Pengelly is set to star at a record-breaking fifth Commonwealth Games as the 51-year-old civil servant teams up with fellow pistol expert Alan Green.

Green, winner of a 2010 Commonwealth Shooting Federation medal in Delhi, who now lives in Switzerland to practice due to the firearms ban in the United Kingdom.

Full-bore rifle shooters Gareth Morris and Robert Oxford have already enjoyed success in Delhi this year as the Welsh pair won three out of four gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Shooting Federation Championships.

Commonwealth debutant Helen Warnes, the Great Britain international, will join the Corish sisters and Brekke in the women's rifle teams.

Cheryl Gizzi will make her Games bow aged 59 but the keen gardener and Cyprus Grand Prix winner has shot competitively for 25 years.

Gizzi will join fellow debutant Jacquelyn Lewis in the women's shotgun teams while pistol partners Rachel Gravell and Nicola Wilson, the Welsh record holder and 2008 Commonwealth Shooting Federation champion, will also make their first Commonwealth appearance.

Welsh shooting team manager John Dallimore said: "I am delighted that Wales is sending such a strong team and I am positive that all will work hard to fulfil their potential.

"The balance of age, experience and youth in the team is brilliant. I'm hopeful of a happy and successful games."
