Pete Reed confident British pair can overhaul Kiwis

Reed ready to reel in rivals

Pete Reed is certain he and Andy Hodge have the quality and experience to get the better of their New Zealand rivals Hamish Bond and Eric Murray in 2011.

The Britons have lost 12 times to the Kiwi pair leading to speculation they would move into a larger boat.

But the battle will resume at the first of the summer's three World Cup regattas, in Munich from 27-29 May.

"We're getting closer and closer and we've got some more gears, I know we have," he told BBC Points West.

Reed and Hodge were closer than ever before to their arch-rivals in securing silver at the 2010 World Championships in November when they trailed by just 0.32 seconds in a race Reed recalls as "thrilling".

Despite the momentum being with the New Zealanders, Reed's confidence is founded on a hard winter of training in which he and Hodge have been setting personal bests in the gym.

The pair also boast rich experience having won Olympic gold in Beijing in the four which they are putting to good use in finding ways to eke more speed from the boat ahead of the resumption of the international season.

"It's always an exciting time, especially the first one. You don't know what's going on out there and we need to establish ourselves again," added the 29-year-old, who hails from Gloucestershire.

"It feels like the start of the Olympic campaign. Every day is little stepping stones with World Cups and World Championships, which is the Olympic qualification regatta so that's a big deal for the Games.

"It's all part of our cycle and process that we've done so many times before and now we're starting to gear up.

"We still haven't reached our peak. We're still improving and our professionalism is still increasing and that's not easy to do when you think you've done everything the previous year.

"Personal bests are hard to achieve and we're doing it. We've got all the tools we need."
