Katherine Grainger named Olympic rower of 2010

Great Britain take gold in the women's double scull

Grainger and Watkins won world gold in the double scull in November

Scottish rower Katherine Grainger completed what she called a "perfect season" by being named the sport's Olympic Athlete of the Year.

Grainger, three-times an Olympic silver medallist, and Anna Watkins were unbeaten in their double scull, winning world gold in New Zealand in November.

And the duo also won two of three World Cup events in the quadruple scull.

"You read about all the athletes being picked out in all the Olympic sports. I'm in incredible company," she said.

"It's a massive deal to win this award. The standard of British Olympic sport is so high these days."

Grainger and Watkins were also recently named women's crew of the year by world governing body Fisa after dominating their event at the World Championships.

The British Olympic Association nominates athletes of the year in all 26 Olympic sports, with Mo Farah, Rebecca Adlington and Amy Williams among the winners when most were announced in December.

British Rowing delayed its announcement until the annual awards dinner at Twickenham, attended by Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and the Olympics.

The event celebrated Great Britain's most successful World Championships ever, where they topped the medal table with four Olympic-class golds, four silvers and a bronze, along with a gold and silver in Paralympic-class events.

Grainger, 33, won silver in the women's quadruple scull at both the Sydney and Beijing Olympic Games, sandwiching another second place in the women's pair in Athens.

She considered retirement after Beijing but opted to continue for another four years with the aim of winning gold at London 2012.
