British rower Beth Rodford views the World Championships as a benchmark for the London Olympics in 2012.

She told BBC Radio Berkshire: "The Olympics are our big goal but the Worlds are a good benchmark for that.

"They tell us where we need to be in preparation for 2012 and how we are performing in comparison to the rest of the world."

The British rowing squad, who are based in Berkshire, will compete at the event in New Zealand on Sunday.

Rodford will row alongside Debbie Flood, Frances Houghton and Annabel Vernon in the Quadruple scull.

"We are all serious and pushing for the same goals so the competition between us is good. It keeps us on our toes and pushes us on to that better performance that we're looking for," said the 27-year-old.

Although much attention has been put upon London 2012, Rodford will not underestimate the importance of success in the World Championships.

"We will be taking the World Championships seriously, it's a good event in it's own right. We want to perform at our best and get a medal," she said.
