By former World Rowing Champion Chris Baillieu

Hammersmith Bridge, built in 1887 and the most elegant of the four bridges framing the course, is a vital landmark straddling the steepest part of the Surrey bend.

HOW TO GET THERE
Tube: Stamford Brook, Ravenscourt Park, Hammersmith
Buses: 33, 72, 209, 283, 419
Having enjoyed an initial advantage rowing round the Fulham bend, the crew on the Middlesex station faces a one-length disadvantage around this one.

In theory, if both crews have rowed at the same speed, they should pass under the bridge level as the Surrey bend distributes its favours more or less equally either side of the bridge.

Psychologically however, it is generally critical for the Middlesex crew to be leading at this point if it is to overcome the second half-length disadvantage of the bend.

This acts as a powerful incentive to the Surrey crew to get ahead as the crews approach the midpoint of the race.
