Russia may be an Olympic superpower, but Moscow is the rank outsider in the battle to host the Games in 2012.

Its evaluation report from the International Olympic Committee was clearly the weakest of the five rivals, with concerns raised about a lack of detailed planning.

And with Paris getting a flawless assessment and London also looking strong, Moscow appears to be too far behind as the final vote approaches.

The Russian capital's only previous hosting experience was in 1980, when the Olympics were hit by a US-led boycott following the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.

Many of the venues would be the same in 2012, with the 80,000-seater Olympic stadium in the existing Luzhniki complex set to be modernised for the occasion.

Moscow has promised the IOC "the most compact Games ever", with all events to be staged within the city limits.

The five main Olympic and Paralympic venue complexes would all be located along the Moscow River and a new athletes' village would be built in the north-west of the city.

It is estimated that 60,000 spectators a day would be able to use passenger piers to travel by boat to the venues.

The most distant would be the sailing venue in the north of the city.
