Nottingham Panthers embarrassed by run - Danny Meyers

Nottingham Panthers captain Danny Meyers says a dire run of 14 losses in 22 games left the players embarrassed.

Panthers ended that poor sequence with three wins in five days - including two shoot-out victories - at the weekend.

Meyers told BBC Radio Nottingham the dip, which piled pressure on player-coach Corey Neilson, got to the team.

"We felt we had embarrassed ourselves and a lot of people over the last few weeks and there was no doubt we were playing for the coach," Meyers said.

Panthers' miserable run began on 4 December with a 2-1 home defeat against Hull Stingrays and reached its lowest point when they were beaten by Newcastle Vipers earlier this month - their second defeat against the Vipers in three weeks.

And although they have made it through to the Challenge Cup final, Neilson's side have slipped out of the Elite League title race and with pressure mounting, there was rumours that Neilson faced the sack if they lost at home to Coventry Blaze last week.

But Panthers got back to winning ways with an impressive victory over Blaze and they then beat arch rivals Sheffield Steelers and Braehead Clan in penalty shoot-outs this weekend.

Meyers added: "We ground out this weekend and it was real character weekend for us.

"I was really pleased with the guys; two shoot-out wins and we battled an awful lot.

"At the start of the week it was all very much doom and gloom and all of a sudden we are on a three-game winning streak.

"We did a lot of talking after the Newcastle game and we had to regroup quickly for the Coventry game. We have changed a few things and at the moment they seem to be better.

We have to make a decision, do we want to entertain or do we want to win?

"We seem to be better defensively; we have put in more of a defensive system.

"I don't think you will see - as Corey likes to call it - the sexy Neilson hockey. It is more of a defensive hockey system we have now.

"Maybe the games aren't as exciting but we have to make a decision, do we want to entertain or do we want to win? Entertaining was great but it wasn't really getting us anywhere so we would much rather win."

"The pressure is always on and never changes. We have a high standard here and the pressure should never be off."
