Hull Stingrays remain rooted to the bottom of the Elite League table following a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle. Coming on top of Saturday's 7-5 reverse in the Challenge Cup to Cardiff, the Rays have lost their last eight games. Adam Knight gave Hull the lead at Newcastle but the home side completed a late turnaround two minutes from time. Despite the second of their weekend defeats, coach Sylvain Cloutier told BBC Radio Humberside: "That's the best we've played for a month and a half." Cloutier's side has been ravaged by a succession of injuries to key players. But he refuses to use that as an excuse and was encouraged by what he saw against Newcastle. "We were very unlucky," he said. "That's the best we've been defensively for a very long time. "The hockey gods are not with us at the moment but hopefully they soon will be." The Stingrays were not as good defensively against Cardiff in their final Challenge Cup group game 24 hours earlier at the Hull Arena, despite leading three times in the first period. Teeanger Matty Davies scored twice, his first goals for the club. But they were not enough to prevent the Rays finished bottom of their qualifying group.
