Panthers book place in cup semi

Nottingham Panthers booked their place in the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup with a 3-1 victory over Coventry Blaze.

Nick Toneys, Marty Gascon and Sean McAslan were the Panthers goalscorers as they came from a goal down.

Gascon told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I think we owed them one from last week when they gave us a good beating in their building, we were mad about that.

"Challenge Cup success is one of our goals this year and it's a good start with us in the next round."

Panthers fell behind halfway through the opening period when Russ Cowley skated unchallenged through the defence and slid the puck past Kevin St Pierre.

Nick Toneys levelled as the session drew to a close as both teams had a man in the box.

Nottingham's game-winning goal was a beauty and came with just five minutes to go thanks to a second goal of the season for Gascon.

"Corey (Neilson) made a nice chip out and Clarky (David Clarke) made an unbelievable play at the blueline," added Gascon.

"Sometimes you don't see that on the highlight reel but he put his body in front of the defenceman so the puck couldn't get out.

"Bergy (Kevin Bergin) faked the shot and just gives it to me and I made sure I made no mistake on that one."

Sean McAslan wrapped the game up with an empty-net goal after Coventry had pulled their netminder Peter Hirsch.
