Neumeier ruled out for the season

Neumeier's injury has left a question mark over his future playing career

Hull Stingrays veteran defenceman Troy Neumeier will not play again this season because of a groin injury.

The 37-year-old may need surgery to repair a detatched ligament, but he will be staying with the club.

Rays coach Rick Strachan told BBC Radio Humberside: "He's done for the year playing wise but he is staying for the year to help us out.

"We'll get him to work with the defence on the bench and two pairs of eyes are better than one in coaching."

It is not clear if the Canadian will call it a day and retire after a professional career that has spanned 20 seasons.

Neumeier will have an MRI scan before a decision is taken about undergoing surgery but the injury means he has no chance of playing again this season in the Elite League for Hull.

Strachan has welcomed the addition of the player to his backroom staff.

He added: "It's going to be great to have him around every day because he is just a very knowledgeable hockey guy.

"It will free up some time for me to concentrate on the game plan and he'll help everyone out."
