The Cardiff Devils were beaten 2-1 in overtime by the Mincoffs Newcastle Vipers on Saturday night in the Bay.
David Longstaff scored the sudden-death winner for the Vipers, taking advantage of a four-on-three powerplay.
Todd Griffith put the visitors ahead after just 62 seconds, but Rod Hinks levelled for the hometown Devils.
The Devils spent much of the game in the Newcastle zone, but Vipers netminder Andrew Verner gave a man of the match performance with 39 saves.
The Devils, who were without Likit Andersson (injury) and Brad Voth (suspension), have a day off on Sunday.
Their next game takes place on Thursday when they visit Belfast to meet the Coors Giants (1900 BST).
