New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur posted his 81st career shut-out as the Devils beat NHL title-holders Carolina 4-0.
Brodeur won his 447th career game, moving into a tie with Terry Sawchuck for third on the all-time list.
New Jersey handed the defending Stanley Cup champions their second straight home loss to start the season.
New Devils head coach Claude Julien said: "They are a pretty explosive team and to beat them, you have got to take away some of their scoring chances."
Three-time Stanley Cup winner Brodeur said teams would be gunning for the Hurricanes all season long.
"The fact that they are the Stanley Cup champions, every team is going to get up for them," he said.
"That is something they are going to have to get used to. That's why it is so hard to repeat. Teams are going after you all the time."
