Murtagh hangs on for title
No Excuse Needed was Murtagh's first winner
Johnny Murtagh retained the London Clubs Trophy for the most successful jockey at Royal Ascot - despite only riding for three of the meeting's five days.
Murtagh tied with weighing room colleague Richard Hughes on four winners, but won the title by virtue of having more placed rides.
The Irish jockey got off to a flying start by winning the opening race of the meeting, the Queen Anne Stakes, aboard Sir Michael Stoute's No Excuse Needed.
He did not ride on the second day because of suspension but partnered Royal Rebel to victory for the second year in a row in Thursday's Gold Cup, the feature race of the meeting. But in another repeat of last year, he controversially picked up a four-day whip ban on the winning horse which will see him miss next weekend's Irish Derby. On the fourth day, he landed a double with Sir Michael Stoute's Balakheri and Revenue, trained by Michael Bell. He did not ride on the final day of the meeting as he was instead in action at the Northern Irish Derby meeting at Down Royal. Mark Johnston, who was the leading trainer at Royal Ascot this year, accepted the award on Murtagh's behalf. Murtagh has had an excellent season so far, capturing two of the three Classics. He won the 2,000 Guineas on Rock of Gibraltar and the Derby on High Chaparral. |
