Ryan Moore can match Lester Piggott, says Willie Carson

Brighton's Moore was Champion Jockey in 2006, 2008 and 2009

Former jockey Willie Carson says Brighton's Ryan Moore could become as good as Lester Piggott.

The three-time Champion Jockey, 27, is due to ride Carlton House in the Epsom Derby on Saturday, 4 June.

Carson told BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey: "Ryan's a trainer's jockey and wants to be involved in the preparation. He is one-track minded and has tunnel vision.

"He does a lot of analysing and is a true professional. There's no reason why he can't become as good as Lester."

Carson added: "He's got a long way to go but he's very, very cool. The younger you are, the less you know can go wrong."

Piggott won the Derby nine times, while Moore won his first last year riding Workforce.

Moore rode Carlton House to victory at the Dante Stakes at York, and Carson has tipped him to win the Derby and regain the Champion Jockey title, which he last held in 2009.

"I don't see Ryan having any worries," Carson continued. "He'll just go through the motions.

"When it comes to the paddock with Her Majesty the Queen and Michael Stout, I bet he's the coolest one there.

"When you win it a second time it becomes routine. But it's not easy.

"I think he'll be getting the Champion Jockey title back again this year."
