York Racecourse has received a double boost with a three-year extension of the John Smith's Cup race along with a new listed race added to the July card.

The John Smith's Cup is already the longest sponsorship in flat racing in the world, having lasted for 51 years.

York's marketing manager James Brennan told BBC Radio York: "We thank (parent company) Heineken for their support of this fantastic contest.

"The new listed race means it will be our best-ever race programme."

The original John Smith's brewery dates back to 1758, acquiring the current site in 1884. Despite takeovers, the association with the racecourse 10 miles away remains strong.

We try and find something to improve the quality of racing every year on the Knavesmire

"As part and parcel of the new deal, a third big race, the City Wall Stakes, joins the action on that day," Brennan added.

"It's a contest over the flying five furlongs on the Knavesmire, so we're looking forward to seeing some of the best sprinters."

The City Wall Stakes is acquired from Chester, and keeps its name since York also features historic City walls. The Chester race attracted more than 32,000 people in 2009.

"We try and find something to improve the quality of racing every year on the Knavesmire," Brennan added.

"John Smith's Cup day will be celebrating 52 years young on 9 July this year, with £150,000 on offer in the John Smith's Cup itself."
