John Gosden's Arctic Cosmos wins St Leger at Doncaster

William Buick rides Arctic Cosmos to victory
Wearing blinkers for the first time had a good effect on Arctic Cosmos

Arctic Cosmos won trainer John Gosden his third St Leger on Saturday with victory by a length-and-three-quarters.

The 12-1 shot, ridden by William Buick, passed Midas Touch in the closing stages, with long-time pace-setter Corsica coming home in third place.

Hot favourite Rewilding, ridden by Frankie Dettori, finished well adrift.

"He's been dossing all year, he's still a big baby," said Buick of his mount. "We put the blinkers on him to sharpen him up and it worked."

Trainer Gosden was similary thrilled with the result.

"We've always dreamt he was a Leger horse and he's done it like a proper horse," he said.

"Our dreams have come true and we're over the moon."

Godolphin's Rewilding, ridden by Dettori, was reported to have been the best-backed horse of the season.

But he was never a serious contender and ran out of steam with some distance still to go.

Corsica, who was intended to be Rewilding's pace-setter, led early on with Ted Spread and Total Command second and third a mile from home.

But with a furlong and a half remaining, Gosden's colt, wearing blinkers for the first time, took over the lead and powered clear of the field.
