Starspangledbanner wins Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot

Johnny Murtagh

Replay - Starspangledbanner wins Golden Jubilee stakes at Ascot

The 13-2 joint favourite Starspangledbanner won the Golden Jubilee Stakes on the final day of Royal Ascot in impressive style.

The son of famed Australian sprinter Choisir enjoyed success in Australia before moving to Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle yard earlier this year.

He made all of the running on the stands rail under Johnny Murtagh to win by a length and three quarters.

Society Rock (50-1) was second ahead of American challenger Kinsale King (8-1).

The winner had finished fifth in the Duke Of York Stakes on his Ballydoyle debut but showed considerable improvement over the six furlongs at Ascot for Murtagh, who was celebrating his third win of the week.

"Today when I rode him he was different, he was in a different zone," he said. "There was 20 lengths improvement from York."

"Aidan was very confident coming into this race. He told me just to jump him out and let him use that stride and when you get to two furlongs out, don't be anxious and when you do go for him I think he will respond.

"Everything just worked perfect. He jumped well, travelled really well, a good strong gallop all the way.

"I sensed them coming to him at the two and when I let him go, he ran straight up the rail. He responded very well and went all the way to the line. I couldn't pull him up. He's a great horse.

"He's very similar to his sire Choisir, big and strong."

It was a notable victory for Starspangledbanner who emulated his father, who had won the race in 2003 under Murtagh.

O'Brien added: "His work since York has been incredible. His second-last furlong was just under nine and a half seconds. We've never seen that at home before.

"When a horse is able to do that, we've never had a horse go that quick before. He's the fastest we've had, no doubt.

"We will look forward to the July Cup, hopefully. He's an incredible sprinter."

Murtagh went on to claim another victory when the Jeremy Noseda-trained Laddies Poker Two landed a monster gamble on her first racecourse appearance in 610 days in the Wokingham Stakes.

The five-year-old was sent off at 9-2 and once Murtagh asked her to quicken past the furlong pole, the response was swift as she finished two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Striking Spirit.

It put Murtagh in pole position for the top jockey's prize going into the final race of the five-day meeting, the Queen Alexandra Stakes, but Ryan Moore's win on Bergo, trained by his father Gary for his first Ascot winner, saw him snatch the crown from his Irish rival.

Both riders finished on four winners but Moore had five seconds, compared to four from Murtagh.

Moore's opening win of the day came on board the odds-on favourite Harbinger who proved a different class in the Hardwicke Stakes.

Sir Michael Stoute's colt was sent off at 8-11 and his supporters never had a moment of worry as the four-year-old travelled well and pulled away from his rivals in the straight to score by three-and-a-half lengths from Duncan.

Clive Brittain's talented two-year-old Zaidan (7-1) maintained his unbeaten record with a three-length victory in the Chesham Stakes.

The winner was sent to the front a long way from home by Seb Sanders and quickly opened up a comfortable advantage.

But favourite backers were denied another win as Imposing (7-4) could only finish second to the 16-1 chance Cill Rialaig in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes.
