Jersey horse racing season set to start at Les Landes

Horse racing at Les Landes
There has been racing on Jersey since 1832 and at Les Landes since 1961

The Channel Island horse racing season begins at Les Landes in Jersey on Easter Monday, the first race over hurdles and the others on the flat.

The season is set to feature nine meetings this year, including one evening fixture on 18 June.

Jersey is well represented by a number of Les Landes favourites, several of which are trained by the prolific duo of Joan Le Brocq and Alison Malzard.

Jockeys Amy Baker, Tony Proctor and Vince Slattery are also set to appear.

Guernsey is represented by Tom Bougourd's Garden Party, a horse bred by the Queen, in the S G Hambros handicap, and King Of The Beers in the Bloodstock Advisory Service Handicap.

There are also four intended runners from England, with Epsom trainer Jack Smith hoping to send two competitors. Goodbye Cash, an entry in the On Course Bookmakers Handicap, has already had a taste of success in the Channel Islands, having won in Guernsey last May when trained by David Evans.

Smith's other runner is expected to be Expensive Problem, a winner on the Lingfield all-weather course in January.

Another winner in England, Slick Mover, trained by Brendan Powell, is set to line up for the Windsor House Hurdle. The grey mare scored twice on the flat at Kempton in midwinter.

The mainland runners are completed by James Bethell's Meml in the Channel Island Racing and Hunt Club Handicap.

The programme begins at 1430BST.
