Pipedreamer powers home with Docofthebay in second
|
The favourite Pipedreamer, ridden by Jimmy Fortune, captured the coveted Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.
The dry ground had left the horse's participation in doubt but he travelled well throughout and quickened clear of the large field to win by a length.
Docofthebay, with Richard Hughes on board, emerged from the pack with a strong late run to finish second.
Teslin headed the group on the stand side, finishing third, with highly fancied The Illies back in fifth.
Fortune was full of praise for the John Gosden-trained horse after securing the prestigious race.
"It was never in doubt, really," he said. "He travelled like a Group horse and I'm sure he is one.
"He's a lovely big horse and he's done nothing but progress from race to race this year - he's getting better every race."
Of the uncertainty over whether to race him, the jockey added: "It's not that he doesn't handle this ground but he is a big horse and he hits the ground hard. We just had his welfare in mind, nothing else."
Docofthebay's trainer Jamie Osbourne commented that much is still expected of the runner-up: "You're never happy finishing second but he ran another great race and is still on the upgrade.
"I don't think handicaps are an option now, so he'll have to take another step up to Listed or Group races next year."
Meanwhile, Lorraine Ellison, daughter and assistant to Teslin trainer Brian, lamented: "With a better draw, I think we would have won and he's probably the unluckiest horse in the race.
"J-P (Guillambert) gave him a great ride and he'll be going to Dubai now for a couple of million dollar races."
