Dylan Thomas was a strong pre-race favourite
|
Aidan O'Brien's Dylan Thomas won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot after sprinting clear with a furlong-and-a-half to go.
Johnny Murtagh's mount came home four lengths ahead of second placed Youmzain, with Maraahel third.
It was the second time both the rider and the trainer had won the race.
O'Brien's other entrant, Scorpion, was the long-time leader but was caught by Maraahel with two furlongs left, before Dylan Thomas left the field trailing.
The horse won last year's Irish Derby and Irish Championship, and came second in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.
"We thought the ground wasn't too bad, so we fancied his chances," said owner Michael Tabo.
"He showed what a good horse he is and won very comfortably in the end."
