The 14-1 chance Sergeant Cecil came through late on to win the John Smith's Northumberland Plate at Newcastle.
Alan Munroe's mount looked to be going well on the inside throughout the two mile race.
But when a gap came in the final half-furlong, he came through to give trainer Rod Millham a notable success.
Tungsten Strike (16-1) was a length and a half back in second with the well-fancied Far Pavillions third, just ahead of Astrocharm.
"I had a rough trip early and was further back than I wanted to be, but I got a great run up the rail," said Munroe afterwards.
"That's just fate and good luck, though.
"This horse has got a great temperament and a lot of quality. He has got a great stride over this sort of trip, with a turn of foot."
