Damson ruled out of 1,000 Guineas

One mile, Newmarket
Sunday 1 May at 1525 BST
Ante-post favourite Damson has been ruled out of Sunday's 1,000 Guineas because of a bad reaction following a workout at Newmarket on Wednesday.

The David Wachman-trained filly, who travelled over from Ireland last week to complete her preparations, was as short as 3-1 for the mile Classic.

Wachman said: "Obviously it's disappointing for all concerned but it's not the end of the world.

"Hopefully, we will have her back in time for the Irish 1,000."

Damson had been the early favourite for the Guineas through the winter having impressed on more than one occasion during her juvenile campaign.

A scintillating three-length winner of the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, the daughter of Entrepreneur then went on to Group One glory in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh.

Her final start of 2004 saw her lose her unbeaten record when third behind Magical Romance in the Cheveley Park Stakes.

Damson, who is owned by Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor, was expected to be the mount of retained rider Kieren Fallon, but he could now switch to the Aidan O'Brien-trained Virginia Waters.

The withdrawal of Damson reduces the number of fillies named at the five-day declaration stage on Tuesday to 22.

Mark Johnston, who won the race last year with Attraction, has supplemented Market Trend for the £342,000 race, which is run over a mile.

Godolphin, looking to win the race for a third time, have left in Fen Shui and Satin Kiss, who has already won the UAE 1,000 Guineas and Oaks this season.

The winners of the two main English trials for the race could also both line up at Newmarket.

Karen's Caper won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and Penkenna Princess took the Dubai Duty Free Stakes.

Bookmakers now make the English-trained Karen's Caper and Shanghai Lily the 4-1 joint favourites.
