Barathea Dreams sprang a surprise as he won the Stanleybet Spring Mile at Doncaster from stall one.
Martin Dwyer guided the 18-1 chance to a comfortable victory.
Flipando (10-1) took second, with Sew'n'So Character (20-1) claiming third as low-drawn horses filled the first three places.
Ermine Grey (33-1), drawn 20, took fourth place and jockeys said afterwards that the pace of the race, and not a low draw, settled matters.
Punters will be closely assessing the race to see if the draw is likely to be a major factor for Saturday's feature event, the Lincoln Handicap.
In Thursday's draw for the big race, high numbers were favoured by trainers.
Stan Moore, trainer of Barathea Dreams, said: "Beforehand I thought I would have been better off in stall 22 than one.
"This was the plan. It doesn't always work out, but it did this time."
