Footstepsinthesand has been retired just two months after winning the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.
The colt has not recovered after bruising a foot when winning the Classic at the end of April.
A statement from the Coolmore Stud said: "The injury requires rest, which would rule him out of the summer's major mile events."
The horse will be retired to the Irish stud's operation in Australia, along with stablemate Antonius Pius.
Footstepsinthesand, owned by Michael Tabor, was unbeaten in all three of his starts, winning at Naas and Leopardstown as a two-year-old before his Newmarket triumph in April.
Antonius Pius was second to Singletary in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Lone Star Park in October 2004.
