British challenge falters in Japan
Martin Dwyer
Martin Dwyer kept Phoenix Reach in the running until the last moments
Phoenix Reach was the best of the British horses at the Japan Cup in Tokyo on Sunday, but could only manage sixth behind winner Zenno Rob Roy.

With Martin Dwyer in the saddle, Phoenix Reach stayed in contention until the home straight but could not keep pace with the pre-race favourite.

The £2.5m Grade One race attracted a strong European challenge with Phoenix Reach joined by Irish-trained Powerscourt, Warrsan and French pair Policy Maker and Lune D'Or.

Cosmo Bulk finished three lengths behind Zenno Rob Roy in second and Delta Blues was back in third.

Warrsan, with Kieren Fallon on board, started promisingly but weakened to finish 15th of the 16 runners and Jamie Spencer's mount Powerscourt dropped back to 10th.

Policy Maker performed well to finish fourth while fellow French horse Lune D'Or came seventh.
